"I think most of us who
have been married for
any substantial length
of time realize that the romantic roller coaster of courtship eventually evens out to the terrain of a Midwest interstate - long,
flat stretches with an occasional overpass."
- Gary Thomas
So I grew up in the midwest - Ohio to be specific. And while I get the point this author was trying to make, for me, he missed the mark.
When we are on the roller coaster it is all about the ride - that is our sole focus - mainly how it feels physically, the build-up as you climb the hill, the tension as you get to the summit and know that the drop and the speed are coming, the exhilarating (or scary) feeling as you head down that drop picking up speed as you go and then go rushing into some sort of loop or curve. I could only do that a few times before being done with roller coasters for the day. At this stage of life, I have no desire to ever be on a roller coaster again.
The point I feel the author misses is the drive down the Midwest highway. It's not about the road, it's about the journey. Drive down a Midwest highway and the scenery is beautiful - snow-covered fields with deer and fox, wheat and cornfields, cows grazing, stunning autumn colors, rivers, creeks, lakes, quaint small towns, covered bridges. It's PEACEFUL. As for me, I'll take the journey down the Midwest highway any day over the roller coaster ride.
